“Well done, good and faithful servant.” — Matthew 25:23
Mat Devon “Man” Spell, 82, of Roseboro, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at his home on March 20, 2026, at 9:38 p.m., surrounded by his loving family and friends.
Born on October 29, 1943, in Sampson County, North Carolina, Mat was the son of the late Benjamin and Ida Marie Spell. He was a man of strong faith who loved the Lord, his family, and his community deeply. Mat lived a life rooted in hard work, humility, and devotion, leaving behind a legacy of love and strength that will not be forgotten.
A Graveside Service will take place at 3:00 pm on Sunday, March 22, 2026, at Peniel Pentecostal Holiness Church, 3681 Dunn Rd, Roseboro, NC 28382.
Visitation will be held prior to the service, 1:30-3:00 pm, within the Fellowship Hall. The family will receive friends' other times at the home, 200 E. Clinton St., Roseboro, NC.
Mat dedicated many years of his life to his work, beginning with Burlington Mills and later retiring after 35 years with Goodyear. Never one to slow down, he continued working for another 10 years with GFL. He was known for his tireless work ethic and commitment to providing for his family.
Outside of work, Mat found joy in simple and meaningful things. He loved cooking hogs, making sausage and barbecue, hauling scrap metal, and spending time drinking coffee with those he cared about. He was well known for his familiar saying, “How much did that cost?”, a reflection of his practical nature and sense of humor. Above all, Mat cherished his family. He shared a beautiful and lasting love with his devoted wife, Betty Spell, with whom he spent 63 wonderful years of marriage. He was a proud grandfather, and many more who knew and loved him also called him “Grandpa,” a testament to the warmth and kindness he showed to everyone.
He is survived by his loving wife, Betty Spell; his sons, Lloyd Spell, and Jerry Spell and wife Claire; his grandchildren, Ciji, Ashley, Matthew, and Hannah; his great-grandchildren, James, Sarah, Ayden, Austin, Cayden, and Chase; and his great-great-grandchild, Kaylee. He also leaves behind his beloved dogs, Harry and Levi, who were part of his everyday life and companionship.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Ida Marie Spell; his son, Mike Devon Spell; and his siblings, Johnny “Bud” Spell, Benjamin Franklin “Goody” Spell, Caroline Marie Johnson, and Mary Donna Bullard.
Mat will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. A man who led by example, loved unconditionally, and kept God at the center of his life. His presence was a blessing to all who knew him, and his memory will live on in the hearts of his family for generations to come.
