Christopher Jamale Vann, affectionately known as Mel, was born December 7, 1984. He entered eternal rest Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at ECU Health in Greenville, NC. He was cared for by his parents for many years in the home.

Mel joined Hills Chapel Missionary Baptist Church at an early age. Mel would attend various churches whenever he could.Most importantly Mel gave his life to Christ. Inspite of a lengthy disability Mel continued to smile and bring joy to others. Mel was non-verbal but he had a way of getting your attention through different sounds, gestures, and facial expressions.

Mel had a love for animals, especially dogs and horses. He learned to ride horses at a very young age and loved it.

Mel is preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Lena B. Vann and Clarence L. Mathis and paternal grandparents, Robert and Mary Smith.

Home Going Service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, March 11, 2023 at Hills Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, 536 SW Center St., Faison, NC. Pastor Mary Thompson, officiating. Burial will take place at Cobbs Cemetery, 328 Juniper Rd, Faison, NC 28341.

Visitation will be 2:00-7:00 pm, with family present from 6:00-7:00 pm, on Friday, March 10, 2023 at Hope Valley Hawkins Funeral Chapel, 1246 Hobbton Hwy. Clinton, NC 28328.

Mel leaves to cherish his memory: daughter, Kenleigh Smith; mother: Brenda Vann Darden (Donnie) and father: Robert Smith Jr.; brothers: Robert Vann (Bit Bit) and Devante Darden; step grandparents: Pastor Larry B. Faison and Kathy; aunts: Angela V. Faison (Gonzales) of Kenansville, Helen Smith of Charlotte, Amy Abraham (Orenthal) of South Carolina, Nichole Smith of Clinton, Charlene Smith of Warsaw, Denise Smith Lopez of Turkey; step aunts: Sho’nita Darden of Turkey and Shakeema Murphy of Warsaw; uncles: Kenneth Vann (Delia), Connell Vann, David Vann, Reginald Vann all of Faison, Shawn Vann (Tammy) of Warsaw, Tyrone Vann (Mable)of Chadbourn, Jimmy Vann (Barbara) of Clayton; step uncles: Tony Darden, Abdual Darden, Larry Faison all of Turkey; great uncle: David Bright Jr.; great aunts: Annie Thompson of Faison, Jackie Allen of Charlotte, and Susan Vann of Warsaw; special cousins: Kyonna Mitchell, Latisha Vann, India Faison, Latisha James, and Randy West; god-brothers: Mackenzie Miller (Keebo), Antwan Faison (Smut) and Prince; as well as a host of many cousins, relatives and friends.

Services have been entrusted to Hope Valley Hawkins Funeral Service & Cremation of Clinton.
