Waitt Brantley
Best
June 21, 1938 – April 13, 2024
Mount Olive
Waitt Brantley Best 85, of 250 Slapout Rd., peacefully passed away on Saturday, April 13, 2024 at Genesis Skilled Nursing and Rehab Center of Mount Olive, NC.
Waitt was born on June 21, 1938 to the late Julius Daniel Best and Vennie Vann Best of the Dobbersville community. He was raised on the farm and this became his first occupation in his younger years, however, he taught himself how to drive eighteen wheelers on the farm and this became his occupation for the next 50 years. He absolutely loved driving trucks. Waitt refered to himself as "plow peddler" because tractors and farm equipment were often what he transported after leaving farming. He later went on to build a shop at home where he repaired and painted tractors and other farm equipment, which he would also transport to equipment auction sales.
Waitt enjoyed cooking pigs and made some of the best barbeque. It brought him so much joy to watch others enjoy his cooking. He was a very good cook. In the winter he would cook large pots of collards for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. There would always be enough left to put in the freezer for a later date. Waitt could often be found riding his beloved "ugly orange golfcart" around the neighborhood, stopping to talk to people.
A Graveside Service will be held at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 at Wayne Memorial Park, 2925 US-117, Dudley, NC 28333.
Waitt is preceded in passing by: his wife of 40 years, Geneverette Wise Best; wife of 15 years, Marie Thornton Best; and grandsons: Michael Ray Gardner and Brantley Daniel Best.
Those left to carry on the memories and legacy of Waitt include: daughter, Kaye Best Gardner and husband Jimmie; son, Marvin Brantley Best and wife Beth; granddaughter, Deanna Kay Gardner and husband Travis; and sister, Joyce Sutton of California.
In luie of flowers the family asks that memorials be made to Daniel's Gifts at FCPCU, 201 E Ash Street, Goldsboro, NC 27530.
