Thomas Lantz Lackey Jr., a devoted family man and respected instructor renowned for his expertise in training truck driving teachers, passed away on May 27, 2026, at Wake Med in Raleigh, North Carolina. Born on October 3, 1964, in Harnett County, Thomas lived a life marked by dedication, skill, and a deep commitment to those he loved.

Throughout his career, Thomas served as an instructor to truck driving teachers, a role that allowed him to share his extensive knowledge and passion for the profession. His dedication to his work was evident in the way he mentored and inspired others, shaping a new generation of instructors with patience and professionalism.
Beyond his professional achievements, Thomas found joy and fulfillment in several hobbies and interests that brought him closer to family and friends. He was an enthusiastic drum player, a hobby that spoke to his rhythm and creativity. His love for truck driving extended beyond the classroom, reflecting a genuine passion for the open road. Additionally, Thomas enjoyed playing pool, a pastime that often brought moments of friendly competition and camaraderie. Most importantly, Thomas cherished spending time with his children and grandchildren, values that defined much of his life.
Thomas is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Lantz Lackey Sr. and June Johnson.
He is survived by his loving wife, Kimberly Lackey, who stood by his side. Together, they raised a wonderful family including daughters Amanda (Matt) Adams of Newton Grove, Amber Lackey, Kaylee Lackey, and Madison Lackey, and his son, Harold Starks, also of the home. Thomas's legacy is lovingly carried forward by his grandchildren Madison, Daisy, Alexis, and Wesley, who brought him immense joy.
Thomas Lantz Lackey Jr. will be remembered not only for his contributions to the field of truck driving education but also for the warmth, humor, and love he shared with those around him. His life was a testament to dedication—to his craft and, most importantly, to his family. He leaves behind a community of family and friends who will honor his memory and cherish the time they shared with him.
