Sgt. William D. "Bill" Matthews 95 of 26 Hillside Lane died Sunday December 3, 2017 at Sampson Regional Medical Center.
Born in 1922 in Fredericktown, Missouri to the late John Henry & Alice Bolinger Matthews. William proudly served our country in WWII while in the United States Army- Air Corps Division from December 1940-October 1945. While serving in the military he served 29 months oversees which include Scotland, England, Africa, Sicily, Italy, India, Newfoundland and several more. William earned the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon with 1 battle star as well as ETO ribbon with 3 battle stars. He is preceded in death by a son: Steve Matthews, sister: Zelda Rouse and brothers: John Matthew, Harold Matthews & AJ Matthews.
A Celebration of Williams Life will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at Hope Valley Hawkins Funeral Service & Cremation, 1246 Hobbton Hwy. Clinton with
Rev. Al Harmon officiating with Military Honors, burial will be held at Eastern Carolina State Cemetery, 164 Longs Plant Farm Road, Goldsboro, NC. at a later date.
Bill leaves to cherish his memories: Sons: Dale Matthews and wife Frances of Clinton, Glenn Matthews of South Carolina, Brothers: Clarence Matthews of Fredericktown, Mo., Sister: Faye Umfleet of Frederick, Mo., Alma Smith of Heber Spring, Ar. 18 grandchildren & 12 great-grandchildren.
