Duane Joel "Sam" Summey, age 94, passed away at the North Carolina State Veterans Home in Fayetteville on February 13, 2023. He was born on February 16, 1928 in Nevada, IA to the late Mark and Irma Tingwald Summey. He was a Navy veteran during the Korean War, serving in San Diego and on the destroyer USS Walke. He spent his career in real estate, as a salesman, broker and developer. Having lived in multiple locations across the United States, he finally settled in North Carolina in 2005, residing in Chocowinity and Raleigh. He enjoyed boating, fishing, hunting and traveling.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Gretchen Summey and his granddaughter Dana Summey.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Mary Summey of Raleigh, NC, his three sons from his first marriage to the late Barbara Johnston, Scott (Cher) Summey of Oconomowoc, WI, Jeff (Jane) Summey of Macon, GA, and Jim (Melo) Summey of Oconomowoc, WI, Mary's children Britt (Patty) Carter of Raleigh, NC, Jay (Charmaine) Carter of Mt. Airy, NC, and Emma Carter of Raleigh, NC, two granddaughters Katie (Steven) Thompson of Atlanta, GA and Alyssa (David) Kayo of Laguna Beach, CA, and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions, in memory of Sam, be made to the charity of your choice.
